So, I\u2019ve been wondering why a word that describes a verb is an adverb, but a word that describes a noun is an adjective \u2013 instead of an adnoun. Finally, I went to the all-knowing Google and came up with some interesting things.<\/p>\n

There Is an Adnoun!<\/span><\/h1>\n

I was surprised to find that Google did not give me a \u201cdid you mean\u201d when I searched for adnoun. Instead I got links! One to what should be the favorite site of all horrid spellers \u2013 dictionary.com<\/span><\/a><\/span>, and a second to Wikipedia<\/span><\/a><\/span>. In this case, Wikipedia did more for me than the dictionary. Apparently, an adnoun<\/strong> <\/span>is an adjective without a noun.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a uniformly known example: Blessed are the meek. You don\u2019t have to agree, but you have probably heard the phrase and know the meaning.<\/p>\n

As the subject of the sentence, \u201cmeek\u201d would be the noun. But, going back to my friend dictionary.com, meek is not a noun, it is an adjective. So, in this case, \u201cmeek\u201d becomes an adnoun.<\/p>\n

How cool is that? Not, actually.<\/p>\n

Origin of Words<\/span><\/h1>\n

Now my problem was that, as a word, adnoun has not been around as long as the others.<\/p>\n

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary<\/span><\/a><\/span> (something I discovered during this research), the word \u201cnoun\u201d came about in the late 14th century and ultimately comes from the Latin nomen<\/i> for \u201cname.\u201d Similarly, \u201cverb\u201d also entered the English language some time in the late 14th century and comes from the Latin verbum<\/i>. \u201cAdverb\u201d came around about the same time as \u201cnoun\u201d and \u201cverb\u201d and is from the Latin adverbium<\/i> witch literally translates as \u201cthat which is added to the verb.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, shouldn\u2019t \u201cthat which is added to the noun\u201d in Latin be something like an adnomen<\/i>? But no, we get adjectivum<\/i> instead! I tried several Latin to English on-line dictionaries; none of them could tell me what jectivum<\/i> means.<\/p>\n

So, where the heck did \u201cadjective\u201d come from?<\/p>\n

What is a Jective?<\/span><\/h1>\n

Someone asked this question to Yahoo, the only response was that it was from the Latin (big surprise there) jacere<\/i> meaning \u201cto throw.\u201d<\/p>\n

Well, that doesn\u2019t work for me either. Especially since my on-line translators don\u2019t particularly care for jacere<\/i> either. However, instead of no response, I was able to find jaceo<\/i> and jacio<\/i>. The first relating to being horizontal or situated and the second to throw or hurl.<\/p>\n

Well, there isn\u2019t one really. Except that this is my blog, and I get to write about whatever I want.<\/p>\n

I do like that modern English does include an adnoun<\/strong><\/span>, but it is not what it should be. And, if I tried to use it in conversation, I\u2019d probably shoot any credibility I have all to pieces.<\/p>\n

Not like we needed another example, but I think that I have proven that the English language is as clear as mud when it comes to the rules.<\/p>\n
