Become the Help."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For the shy and\/or introverted, a networking event can be as\nclose to hell as an empty room is to a socialite. So why would we \u2013 the\nintroverted \u2013 face that torture? Simple, human interaction is a fact of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many activities in life that resemble networking\nevents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Parties (including weddings and funerals)<\/li><li>Family reunions<\/li><li>Holidays<\/li><li>First day of school<\/li><li>First day on the job<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We walk into rooms of people \u2013 the number of strangers being\nvariable \u2013 all the time. Some people manage it with aplomb, others of us \u2026 not\nso much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rooms Full of People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to walking into that room full of people, my\nfirst instinct tends to be to leave as quickly as possible, or, at least, to\nfind a corner to hide in where only people I know will find me. Alas, as a\nbusiness owner, that\u2019s not an option \u2013 even at family events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how do I cope? By helping. Actually, I become the help.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Networking and business books around the world will tell you that by acting like a host \u2013 instead of a guest \u2013 networking is easier. The point is that if you go to an event and <span style=\"color: #055a3c;\"><strong>think about others first<\/strong><\/span>, your own nervousness tends to dissipate. The prime example of how to act like a host is to become a member of your Chamber of Commerce\u2019s Ambassador team. Generally, I go to events where I know the organizers and can offer assistance with set up, clean up, whatever. Early in Tora\u2019s existence, I was already at the venue where an event I would be attending was being held. So, when the furniture started to move, I started to help. I ended up getting the bar table ready and wines corked. Because I was standing there looking like I knew what I was doing, I started pouring wine for early arrivals. I ended up the bartender for the evening. It made conversation so much easier because it was already started before any words were spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I regularly went to their events and helped get things set up, I was soon the unofficial bartender (I&#8217;ve even been named the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victoryworkspace.com\/\">Victory Workspace<\/a> &#8220;Badass Bartender&#8221;). What\u2019s fun is that people began to recognize me. I started having conversations like:<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You look familiar, how do I know you?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, have you ever had someone at Victory Workspace pour you a glass of wine?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Actually, yes! At the event last week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, that was me pouring.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The added benefit is that I\u2019m \u201callowed\u201d to put a stack of my\ncards on the \u201cbar\u201d to help nudge the work-related conversation along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I can\u2019t help at the bar, I\u2019ll help in the kitchen. Again,\nbecause I lean towards events where I already know at least the organizers, I\ncan generally find a task that allows me to interact with people without having\nto start a conversation from scratch. For me, that\u2019s the hardest part of networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extra Benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from having instant made conversation topics, by being\nknown as someone willing to lend a hand, I\u2019ve made friends with people who are\nwilling to introduce me around. This can ease some of the pressure I feel when\nthere is a person I want to meet yet am having a hard time getting myself to\ntalk to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next time you\u2019re out networking \u2013 or just at a gathering \u2013 and\nbegin to feel the urge to flee, ask how you can help.
