{"id":473,"date":"2016-07-12T10:33:06","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T17:33:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/?p=473"},"modified":"2016-07-12T10:34:01","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T17:34:01","slug":"writing-project-laundry-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/writing-project-laundry-list\/","title":{"rendered":"It Takes More than Just Words &#8211; What&#8217;s Really Involved when Writing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When people say, \u201cI\u2019m going to write a &lt;fill in the blank&gt;,\u201d it is amazing how little they know about writing a &lt;fill in the blank&gt;. Most people think that all they need to do is sit down and write!<\/p>\n<p>OK, maybe it is not that bad. A large portion of the population understands that there could be some research involved and that editing and rewrites are necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s think about this some.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where do most people do most of their reading these days? On their computer, tablet, smart phone, or e-reader.<\/li>\n<li>What are most people generally reading these days? Websites (including blogs and social media), magazines and newspapers (generally of the \u201ce\u201d variety\u201d), and the occasional book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I promise, even the occasional book requires more than just researching, writing, and editing.<\/p>\n<p>What else is involved? Well, you can break it down into two main categories: <span style=\"color: #055a3c;\"><strong>images and presentation<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h1>Images<\/h1>\n<p>For the purpose of simplicity, when I say images here, I mean anything that is not purely text: tables, charts, pictures, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Why are images important? Well, for the most part, <span style=\"color: #055a3c;\"><strong>plain text is boring<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>But wait, there\u2019s more!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-476\" src=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/EyeStrain-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Eye Pain\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/EyeStrain-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/EyeStrain-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/EyeStrain-768x768.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/EyeStrain-1024x1024.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/EyeStrain-50x50.jpeg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>For all that e-reading we\u2019re doing these days, not only is text boring, it can be painful. Have you ever gotten a headache because you were looking at your computer for too long? You are not the only one. Reading off of a screen is hard on the eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s my justification for not owning an e-reader: studies show that comprehension and retention of content read from a screen is less than when read from paper. Studies have not figured out why that is, but science generally accepts that when I read an actual book, I\u2019ll understand and remember it better than someone who read it off a screen. An image can help improve understanding and retention of a topic \u2013 especially technical ones.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <span style=\"color: #055a3c;\"><strong>people have short attention spans<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 especially when reading off a screen. Images help keep people engaged. They break things up, make them more interesting, and satisfy that \u201cSquirrel!\u201d tendency.<\/p>\n<p>How often do you read something online that is totally image free? More to the point, how often do you follow a link because of the image next to it?<\/p>\n<h1>Presentation<\/h1>\n<p>Since we\u2019re talking about written words, they need to be presented so that people can see (and then read) them.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #055a3c;\">The most basic form of presentation is formatting<\/span>.<\/strong> Headers, margins, indenting, bullet and number lists, font, size, bold, underline, page numbers (for actual hard copy), and justification are just a few things to consider.<\/p>\n<p>Also, where are your images with respect to your text? Is the table explaining the content of this paragraph three pages away?<\/p>\n<p>If you are sending a mass e-mail \u2013 like a newsletter \u2013 <span style=\"color: #055a3c;\"><strong>are you in compliance with SPAM laws<\/strong><\/span>? Yes, there are laws that regulate what you send to your email lists.<\/p>\n<p>Are you giving a PowerPoint presentation? Well, I have a whole <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/hazards-powerpoint\/\">other blog<\/a><\/span> just on that topic.<\/p>\n<p>Are you writing for your business? Is it visually consistent with everything else written for your business? Visual consistency lends to your credibility. It subtly tells people, <span style=\"color: #055a3c;\"><strong>\u201cI have standards, and I keep to them.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Your writing represents you, how it looks reflects on you just as much as how it reads.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_475\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-475\" style=\"width: 892px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-475\" src=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/formatting.png\" alt=\"All those icons at the top of the scree when you're writing? They&#8217;re mostly for improving the overall presentation of your work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h1>Writing Project Laundry List<\/h1>\n<p>Every writing project includes at least some of this laundry list \u2013 maybe not all, but definitely some.<\/p>\n<p>So, next time someone says, \u201cI think I\u2019ll write a &lt;fill in the blank&gt;,\u201d make sure they understand the list of things they need to consider. First, there\u2019s the obvious:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Researching<\/li>\n<li>Writing<\/li>\n<li>Editing<\/li>\n<li>Rewriting<\/li>\n<li>More research<\/li>\n<li>More editing<\/li>\n<li>Did I mention editing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then there are those other, insidious little things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Charts, tables, graphics<\/li>\n<li>Pictures (and captions, many pictures need captions)<\/li>\n<li>Text formatting<\/li>\n<li>Page formatting<\/li>\n<li>Slide formatting<\/li>\n<li>Layout<\/li>\n<li>Templates for:\n<ul>\n<li>Email<\/li>\n<li>Hard copy<\/li>\n<li>Presentations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Email compliance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The good news is that writing projects are at least two-person jobs. (The editor is always someone different.)
