{"id":402,"date":"2016-03-10T16:59:21","date_gmt":"2016-03-11T00:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/?p=402"},"modified":"2016-11-29T11:13:01","modified_gmt":"2016-11-29T19:13:01","slug":"provocative-words","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/provocative-words\/","title":{"rendered":"Provocative Words"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to my \u201cOde to the Thesaurus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite Facebook pages is <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/writerscircle\/timeline\" target=\"_blank\">The Writer\u2019s Circle<\/a><\/span>. I always seem to glom onto their lists of Other Words For &lt;fill in the blank&gt;. I\u2019ve several of them clipped into my Blog Ideas notebook in Evernote. One I\u2019ve been looking at a lot lately is for \u201cwalk\u201d or \u201cgo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Initially, you might be surprised at all the words on the list. However, think about all the different ways people walk. Forget people, think of all the different ways you walk!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-403\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-403\" src=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Walk-300x225.png\" alt=\"How many ways can you walk?\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Walk-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Walk-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Walk.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">How many ways can you walk?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I suspect that you generally <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>stroll<\/strong><\/span> through the park, unless being chased by a clown, in which case you\u2019re more likely to <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>skedaddle<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>scram<\/strong><\/span>, or <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>tear out<\/strong><\/span> of the park.<\/p>\n<p>Do you <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>lope<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>limp<\/strong><\/span>, or <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>lumber<\/strong><\/span>? Personally, it depends on my mood.<\/p>\n<p>My sister says I <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>strut<\/strong><\/span>, but I think of it more as <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>striding<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect only a true cowboy know the difference between a <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>mosey<\/strong> <\/span>and an <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>amble<\/strong><\/span>, I like both.<\/p>\n<p>With so many options for how a person puts one foot in front of the other, think of all the various words we have for emotions. This isn\u2019t just a list, it\u2019s a grid of various emotions felt to different extents. (A chart of words, what more could an Engineering Word Nerd ask for!)<\/p>\n<p>While I\u2019d put <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Zippy<\/strong> <\/span>in the Medium section of Happiness instead of Strong, it is a sweet collection. For example, are you thoroughly <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>flummoxed<\/strong> <\/span>or just bit <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>unsettled<\/strong><\/span>? Instead of angry, are you <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>infuriated<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>irate<\/strong><\/span>, or <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>irked<\/strong><\/span>?<\/p>\n<p>Can you swing from <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>sunny<\/strong> <\/span>to <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>belligerent<\/strong> <\/span>in two seconds flat?<\/p>\n<p>I must say, though, that I\u2019m a tad <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>disappointed<\/strong> <\/span>at the lack of entries for physical pain. After all, from an <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>itch<\/strong> <\/span>to <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>agony<\/strong><\/span>, how we feel physically has an unutterable impact on our emotional state. On the other hand, I\u2019m <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>ecstatic<\/strong> <\/span>that nonplussed is nowhere to be found. I also wish more positive emotions featured, then I could have lots more fun in this section.<\/p>\n<p>Did I mention the 101 alternates to amazing? It is a <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>glorious<\/strong> <\/span>collection of <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>spectacular<\/strong> <\/span>adjectives.<\/p>\n<p>All of the words I\u2019ve put in bold evoke a different image, from each other or the basic words they replace.
