{"id":284,"date":"2015-01-07T17:13:36","date_gmt":"2015-01-08T01:13:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/?p=284"},"modified":"2015-02-24T17:17:48","modified_gmt":"2015-02-25T01:17:48","slug":"bogus-grammar-errors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/bogus-grammar-errors\/","title":{"rendered":"More &#8220;Bogus Grammar Errors&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last time, I talked about 2 of the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/theweek.com\/article\/index\/240882\/7-bogus-grammar-errors-you-dont-need-to-worry-about\" target=\"_blank\">7 bogus grammar \u2018errors\u2019 you don\u2019t need to worry about<\/a><\/span> as explained by author <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.benyagoda.com\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Yagoda<\/a><\/span>. I was having a day of Latin grammar references that needed attention, so I skipped the so-called rules that I couldn\u2019t directly connect to Latin. However, I\u2019m so pleased that someone is calling attention to these rules that aren\u2019t rules and explaining where they came from, that I couldn\u2019t leave those not-related-to-Latin ones unmentioned.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/No-Rules.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-286\" src=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/No-Rules-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"No Rules\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/No-Rules-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/No-Rules-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/No-Rules-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/No-Rules.jpg 325w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>But First, a Disclaimer<\/span><\/h1>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\nFor me, learning the grammar necessary for clear communication was a matter of living in it, not formal education. When the education was happening, my brain wasn\u2019t taking it. Honestly, I don\u2019t care about the difference between subjunctive, pluperfect, and past perfect progressive verbs. I care about what works. Remember, my passion is Clear Communication \u2013 not grammatically correct communication. <span style=\"color: #006633;\">END OF DISCLAIMER<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>So, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/latin-killing-english\/\" target=\"_blank\">bogus grammar rules 1 &amp; 2<\/a><\/span> were Don\u2019t Split Infinitives and Don\u2019t End a Sentence with a Preposition, respectively. Number 3: <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Don\u2019t Use \u201cWhich\u201d as a Relative Pronoun<\/strong><\/span>; this one hasn\u2019t caused me much trouble. It appears that this \u201crule\u201d started as a speculation. Apparently, commentator H.W. Fowler stated the opinion that introducing defining or restrictive clauses with \u201cthat\u201d instead of \u201cwhich\u201d would make communications clearer. As everyone knows, I\u2019m all for clearer communications; and, I find the hair that separates \u201cthat\u201d form \u201cwhich\u201d a little too thin to split.<\/p>\n<p>I think my favorite is Number 4, <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Don\u2019t Start a Sentence with a Conjunction<\/strong><\/span>. If I ever learned this rule, I\u2019m not sure I\u2019ve ever followed it. Turns out there is only one minimal reference from 1868 that actually states this as a rule, suggestion, supposition, or anything else! Start any sentence you like with <em>And<\/em> or <em>But<\/em> and to heck with whatever grammar teacher told you otherwise. Now, I need to disagree with Mr. Yagoda\u2019s point that a comma shouldn\u2019t follow an opening conjunction. For me, commas indicate a pause; and sometimes a pause is appropriate after an opening conjunction. I think this is where we\u2019ll need to agree to disagree.<\/p>\n<p>When I reached Number 5, <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Don\u2019t Use the Passive Voice<\/strong><\/span>, I thought there might be a problem. This is not a bogus rule! Actually, it is. It is a great suggestion, a preferable writing style, but not a rule. And, the truth is, there are some places where only the passive voice will do. Would \u201cWe hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,\u201d be as powerful in the active voice? \u201cAs created, all men are equal,\u201d just doesn\u2019t hold the same appeal. According to Liz Bureman of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/thewritepractice.com\/when-you-should-use-passive-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Write Practice<\/a><\/span>, when the object of the action is more important than the initiator, the passive voice is the way to go.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Don\u2019t Neglect to Use Singular Verbs<\/strong><\/span> is bogus rule Number 6. Here, Mr. Yagoda\u2019s point is not that you can neglect subject\/verb agreement but rather that while some words are technically plurals (such as data is the plural of datum \u2013 that damn Latin again), we treat them as singulars. In practice, \u201cdata is\u201d; even though technically, \u201cdata are\u201d is correct. As Mr. Yagoda says, insisting on the technically correct \u201cis pretentious and unnecessary.\u201d This point also addresses the case of a collection word (group, bunch, etc.) followed by \u201cof\u201d and then contents of the collection (friends, flowers, etc.). As it happens, the verb form depends more on the emphasis of the sentence. \u201cA group of friends ARE joining you for dinner\u201d; and \u201cthe bunch of flowers IS beautiful\u201d both make sense. Yet, \u201ca group of friends IS joining you for dinner\u201d; and \u201cthe bunch of flowers ARE beautiful\u201d just feel a little awkward.<\/p>\n<p>FINALLY, bogus rule Number 7, <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Words Always Mean the Same Thing<\/strong><\/span>. The meanings of words evolve. While the people who initiate the evolution tend to open themselves to abuse, the meanings do change.
