I subscribe to her blog \u2013 I don\u2019t read it often, but they all still live in my inbox. I love her work because she talks straight, thinks along the same lines I do, and throws in swear words because that\u2019s just her style.<\/p>\n<p>In my various web wanderings, I\u2019ll clip articles that catch my fancy to Evernote so that I can blog about them later.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the two came together. I decided for this blog to take on one of my clippings from several months ago: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexpress.com\/us\/small-business\/openforum\/articles\/5-buzzwords-you-need-to-stop-using-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">5 Buzzwords You Need to Stop Using Now<\/a><\/span>. <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>I\u2019m all for the banning of buzzwords.<\/strong><\/span> If I noticed that Erika Napoletano (aka Redhead Writing) was the author, I didn\u2019t save that piece of information, so it was a pleasant surprise to see her byline when I opened up the article.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Buzzwords.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-270\" src=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Buzzwords-300x273.jpg\" alt=\"Buzzwords\" width=\"300\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Buzzwords-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Buzzwords.jpg 572w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The gist of the blog is that it is better to <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>speak plain English because no one understands buzzwords<\/strong><\/span>. (Now, be honest, do you really know what you\u2019re talking about when you use buzzspeak? If you do, you are the only one.)<\/p>\n<p>Erika (Ms. Napoletano just seems so wrong) selected overarching, disrupt, engagement, ROI, and platform as her nasty words. She argued each one very clearly and, I have to say, she \u201cchose wisely.\u201d Admittedly, \u201cplatform\u201d and \u201cdisrupt\u201d haven\u2019t hit my radar, but they are sure to bug me from now on.<\/p>\n<p>Another good point made is that, at times, a buzzword meaning does not come close to the dictionary meaning \u2013 a great annoyance to many a Word Nerd. A point I wish she made is that over-use of <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>buzzwords makes people sound stupid<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I think that <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>over-use by the inadequately educated<\/strong><\/span> is what takes an industry term to buzzword. Let\u2019s take ROI (Return on Investment) as an example. This buzzword hit me square in the face long before I considered going into business for myself. I was at a conference giving software demonstrations and suddenly I couldn\u2019t get away from it. Even when one client quietly told me what ROI meant, I still didn\u2019t get it. But everyone was using it. At some point, only accountants referred to making money back as a \u201creturn on investment.\u201d As an accounting term, I\u2019m sure ROI became shorthand for other accountants. But then, someone \u2013 probably wanting to look good in front of the boss \u2013 picked up the term, used it to death, and turned it into the buzzword we all know and hate today.<\/p>\n<p>There are so many great words out there; it is a pity to spoil any of them with over and\/or improper use.
