And, job positions ought to be neutral. Male or female, someone is a server or a flight attendant. However, I believe <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>people are taking gender neutrality too far<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The idea for this blog came from several places: something on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailywritingtips.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">dailywritingtips.com<\/span><\/a> (a very useful site), a bit I heard on the radio, and my exasperation with political correctness \u2013 to name a few. However, I gained a sharper focus when I tripped over an article on WritingHelp-Central.com listing <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.writinghelp-central.com\/gender-neutral.html\" target=\"_blank\">gender-neutral equivalents<\/a><\/span>. I find the length of that list stunning.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_264\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-264\" style=\"width: 238px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2013-04-30-12.19.44-e1416651469823.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-264 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2013-04-30-12.19.44-e1416651469823-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2013-04-30-12.19.44-e1416651469823-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/2013-04-30-12.19.44-e1416651469823.jpg 364w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-264\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Uncle Sam is not gender neutral.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are terms that, technically, specify a gender but are so common we don\u2019t even notice. Prime example: fraternal twins. Yes, fraternal is Latin for \u201cbrotherly\u201d; but how often do you think \u201cbrotherly\u201d when someone mentions fraternal twins? Who puts a gender to that at all? Obviously someone does, but \u2026 really?<\/p>\n<p>Anything starting with \u201cmother\u201d has also made the list: mother country, Mother Earth, mother lode, and so on. Basically, these are all things of origin. <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Until men start giving birth (the ultimate origin for humans), what is wrong with applying \u201cmother\u201d to such things?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>And then we have the \u201cmaster\u201d references: master plan, master key, mastermind, master\u2019s degree. My good friend, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/master?s=t\" target=\"_blank\">dictionary.com<\/a><\/span>, does have several entries for master, the first is \u201ca person with the ability or power to use, control, or dispose of something.\u201d The fourth is where the gender freaks come in, \u201cthe male head of a household.\u201d Let\u2019s just say that <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>any man or woman can be a master of their art<\/strong><\/span> or earn a master\u2019s degree. And since English does not apply gender to nouns, why can\u2019t the key that opens all doors be a master key?<\/p>\n<p>Several colloquialisms have also made the list. As informal language, these terms evolved into our language, and will likely evolve away again, so there\u2019s no reason to get my knickers in a twist.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Here\u2019s the one that really got this blog going in my head: penmanship.<\/strong><\/span> I first heard this on the radio and it really had me scratching my head (still does). After checking three on-line dictionaries and my physical Webster\u2019s, I could not find a definition that had anything to do with gender. It was all around handwriting. The only thing I can think of is that someone finds the fact that \u201cman\u201d is part of the spelling offensive.<\/p>\n<p>If we\u2019re going to start getting fussy about words simply because there is something gender-specific in the spelling, than how come \u201chu<span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>man<\/strong><\/span>\u201d is not on the list, or \u201c<span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>his<\/strong><\/span>tory\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>You know what other word avoided the list? Laundress. As far as I can tell, there is not a masculine version of the term.
