As such, I hear many sales pitches about how fantastic this widget is versus another widget. One term that drives me nuts and is part of the vocabulary of newly minted B-school graduates and sales trainees is, \u201cvalue proposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why does it drive me nuts? <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>It doesn\u2019t mean anything and it\u2019s rude<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>But, Jen! I really do have a value proposition! Yes, I\u2019m sure you think you do. You think that whatever you\u2019re selling is better than something else. You don\u2019t need to tell me you have a value proposition, you need to <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>tell me what you\u2019re selling<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 product, service, everything. Your \u201cvalue proposition\u201d doesn\u2019t have value unless the recipient of the proposition deems it to have value. Therefore, you have a proposition to which I get to assign value. Not all value is good.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/What.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-210\" src=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/What.jpg\" alt=\"What\" width=\"100\" height=\"148\" \/><\/a>On to it just being rude\u2026 Like the phrase, \u201cword-smithing,\u201d \u201cvalue proposition\u201d is glossy wrapping paper on the mundane. People use it to sound smart and dumbfound their audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cMr. Jones, I have a value proposition for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cGee! It must have value to me because you said it did!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It assumes that the recipient of this great value is an idiot and can\u2019t see through the gloss. To those who have never heard \u201cword-smithing,\u201d consider yourself lucky \u2013 it just means editing.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s wrong with being genuine in your goals and laying out the widget and demonstrating what it can and cannot do? If it\u2019s really that great, the recipient will give it positive value. She\u2019s also my sister, so you might note some similarities in voice, rant style, or belief systems.<\/p>\n<p>According to her <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jennifernporter\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">LinkedIn profile<\/span><\/a><\/span>, Jennifer is an \u201cSPHR and benefits professional with proven history of group benefits expertise including experience analysis, plan management, and communication to integrate benefit design and cost into overall corporate goals.\u201d This means nothing to her younger sister. She specializes in big picture thinking, benefits consulting, benefits experience analysis, HR\/benefits communications, and presentations. She is also an excellent sister and friend.
