Instead, <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>\u201cirony\u201d bugs me because I don\u2019t get it<\/strong><\/span>. Occasionally, I know an example of it, but, for the most part, when it comes to irony, I\u2019m in the dark.<\/p>\n<p>I was wandering around one of my new favorite sites, <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>DailyWritingTips<\/strong><\/span>, and found <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailywritingtips.com\/what-is-irony-with-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">What is Irony? (With Examples)<\/span><\/a><\/span> and thought that, finally, I would understand. Nope. Once again, the internet proves that it is the best source of information \u2013 and confusion \u2013 ever.<\/p>\n<p>The article included dictionary definitions that helped me not one whit. And the promised examples were sketchy.<\/p>\n<h1>An Interesting Point<\/h1>\n<p>Then I started looking at some of the 167 comments. Wow, I can only hope my rants become so eloquent.<\/p>\n<p>One person did offer these basic definitions:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. The truth is different than what is perceived.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2. The outcome is different than what is expected.<\/p>\n<p>Instantly, I thought, \u201cbut that\u2019s not enough!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And then, the very next comment explained why the above definitions are insufficient for me:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201c[I]t would seem to me that just because truth is different from perception, and\/or outcome doesn\u2019t meet expectations, does not mean something is ironic. There must be some other twist that makes an ordinary misperception, or an unexpected outcome, take on the cloak of irony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Is irony just a misperception? Or is it something bigger? <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>For something to be ironic, doesn\u2019t it have to be more impressive than just an unexpected result?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If not, then most scientific study is ironic.<\/p>\n<h2>Maybe it\u2019s Cultural<\/h2>\n<p>Another comment suggested that the reason Americans have such a hard time with the term is that we are somehow emotionally stunted when it comes to irony.<\/p>\n<p>Could be, considering how many Americans hate British humor. Personally, I don\u2019t hate British humor, I just understand that I don\u2019t understand it. And, if British humor is ironic, is it any wonder why I\u2019m confused?<\/p>\n<h3>More than Cultural<\/h3>\n<p>There are words in languages that do not properly translate into English simply because they represent something \u2013a weather condition, an experience, a geographic feature \u2013 that is not something anyone who speaks English is familiar with. I think \u201cirony\u201d falls into that category.<\/p>\n<p>What? But we are speaking about a word in the English language, how can it not translate into English?<\/p>\n<p>Well, because US-English, British-English, Australian-English, and Canadian-English are different languages. They are closely related, but the <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>different locations called for different evolutions of the original language<\/strong><\/span>.
