Since the only thing maroon can be is a color, there\u2019s no need to say more.) I also really appreciated the concept that <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>just because one word is good, two is not necessarily better<\/strong><\/span>. However, the writer\u2019s inner grammar Nazi did strike me as a little much in some instances.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\">Why a Free Gift?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>If it\u2019s a gift, then it\u2019s free right? So the term is redundant. However, what about the ever popular \u201cgift with purchase\u201d so common at makeup counters and late-night TV? While you are not paying extra for the stuff, it is not really free. (While I cannot confirm this, I once heard that some countries have out-lawed \u201cgift-with-purchase\u201d for just that reason.)<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\">The Army Soldier<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>The first definition of <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/soldier?s=t\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">soldier<\/span><\/a><\/span>, as provided by my great friend dictionary.com, is \u201ca person who serves in an army; a person engaged in military service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, technically, an \u201carmy soldier\u201d is redundant. Yet, I think it is fairly safe to say that most people think of soldiers in the more general sense expressed in the second part of the definition. In that case, an \u201carmy soldier\u201d is a person engaged in military service \u2013 specifically the army.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\">Baby Nursery<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>OK, so definition one of <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/nursery?s=t\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">nursery<\/span><\/a><\/span> is, \u201ca room or place set apart for young children.\u201d So, a \u201cbaby nursery\u201d is only slightly redundant technically. (Sorry, young children does not equal baby.) It is, however, very redundant culturally. UNLESS, that is, you are a plant person. In that case, your brain might jump directly to definition three, \u201ca place where young trees or other plants are raised for transplanting, for sale, or for experimental study.\u201d For plant-people, \u201cbaby\u201d may be a required adjective to get their minds out of the dirt.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\">In the End<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>I believe that it is better to be a grammar geek instead of a full fledged grammar Nazi. Language either evolves or dies, we cannot be so strict enforcing yesterday\u2019s rules because they really may not apply tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Unless, of course, we\u2019re talking about the Oxford comma.
