My friends generally agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Because said social media wouldn\u2019t let me find the post again, I went to everyone\u2019s buddy, Google, and searched for it. One <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heracliteanriver.com\/?p=324\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">result<\/span><\/a><\/span> was \u201cWhy two spaces after a period isn\u2019t wrong (or, the lies typographers\u2026)\u201d Well, that caught my attention.<\/p>\n<p>This article, from November of 2011, is more a thesis paper about how the original article is \u201ca fairy tale.\u201d The author brings many interesting points to the reader\u2019s attention, and cites a great deal of documentation that proves the point \u2013 I think. I must admit, that this treatise became more than a little long-winded for me and I started to scroll past large sections.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\">1 Space\u2026<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>In short, here\u2019s the argument for one space: it saves paper and makes publications cheaper.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\">\u2026 or 2<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Two spaces have historical standing.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\">My Preference<\/span><\/h1>\n<figure id=\"attachment_163\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-163\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/BarrySunset4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-163\" alt=\"We all like our space, but how much do we need in writing? Then I went to work for a company that had one-space as part of their documentation policy and I changed my habit.<\/p>\n<p>Why I prefer one space after a period borders on the ridiculous. I do most of my writing in Word and I keep the normally hidden characters on. So, on the screen, there are little dots all over my writing, each indicating a space \u2013 why would I want two together. If I could selectively display hidden characters in Word, maybe I could become a two-space girl again.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\">In the End<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>What I really hate is justified alignment. If two spaces after a period is ugly (as the one-spacers tend to argue), then how does anyone tolerate the gaps that can happen when justifying a document? To me, that\u2019s a real waste of space.<\/p>\n<p>While a one-spacer myself, I love how the proponent for the two-spacers concluded:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cYeah, typography is an art. Complaining about the way people space their sentences in their own documents is being an ass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(I did remove the second space between the sentences.
