One that I really enjoy is <strong><span style=\"color: #006633;\">10 Words to Cut From Your Writing<\/span><\/strong> from entrepreneur.com. This blog on <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/229369\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">copy writing tips<\/span><\/a><\/span> really appealed to the editor in me \u2013 maybe because people frequently come to me to reduce their word count.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_135\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-135\" style=\"width: 233px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/DSC06999rev-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-135\" alt=\"Not a single example of the Taboo 10; instead a clear description of a nice wine. Nicoles 2007<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now, deleting individual words in hopes of making a significant dent in word count is like trying to prevent a flood with an eyedropper \u2013 not very effective. But I\u2019m digressing \u2013 again.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, the <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>Taboo 10<\/strong><\/span> are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Just<\/li>\n<li>Really<\/li>\n<li>Very<\/li>\n<li>Perhaps, and it\u2019s sibling Maybe<\/li>\n<li>Quite<\/li>\n<li>Amazing<\/li>\n<li>Literally<\/li>\n<li>Stuff<\/li>\n<li>Things<\/li>\n<li>Got<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Put that in a different order and you get the verbal onslaught of a <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Valley_Girl\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Valley Girl<\/span><\/a><\/span>.)<\/p>\n<p>There are two common issues with these words; they are either 1) useless filler, or 2) meaningless.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\">Useless Filler<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>Remember, people read differently than they hear. The words \u201creally\u201d and \u201cvery\u201d provide verbal emphasis that generally does not translate into writing. If you\u2019re looking to add emphasis, there are so many adjectives and adverbs that do a much more evocative job. What\u2019s better, \u201cI was really sick\u201d or \u201cI was violently ill\u201d? And if you did not actually violently ill, why not just write, \u201cI was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only time \u201cliterally\u201d has a use is when you want people to understand that you are not speaking in exaggerating or joking terms. Otherwise, it is redundant \u2013 and you said it already.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\">Meaningless<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>A word is meaningless in writing when it is too vague or used too much.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with \u201cstuff\u201d and \u201cthings.\u201d Save your reader from wondering \u201cwhat stuff? what things?\u201d and <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>just tell them<\/strong><\/span>!<\/p>\n<p>Another way a word becomes vague is when it means too many different things. While everybody may know what \u201cgot\u201d means in context, why not take advantage of your vocabulary and use the word you mean? When you \u201cgot out of bed\u201d this morning, did you spring, slide, slither, fall, or leap?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazing\u201d is a great example of an over-used word. As they say, \u201cHow can something be amazing if everything is?\u201d You can also make \u201camazing\u201d meaningless by only using it do describe things that are special. The thesaurus is a beautiful thing, use it without fear.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #006633;\">Perhaps\/Maybe<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>This makes the list because uncertainty in writing can be deadly. One of the <span style=\"color: #006633;\"><strong>primary points of writing is to convince someone of something<\/strong><\/span>. Why would anyone be convinced if you express doubt yourself?<\/p>\n<p>In the case of <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/explanatory-writing-is-your-message-clear\/explanatory-writing-is-your-message-clear\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">explanatory writing<\/span><\/a><\/span>, I\u2019m totally on board.
