Crassly insulting someone\/thing in public is generally frowned upon. For example, \u201cyou\u2019re f-ing ugly\u201d is a simple insult; easy words, understandable, and yet lacking in subtlety and a safe for all audiences rating. On the other hand, \u201cOh my goodness, look at you. Was anyone else hurt in the accident?\u201d says so much without a single offensive word.<\/p>\n<p>(NOTE: I do not condone telling people they are unattractive; I just had to share that one.)<\/p>\n<p>People who know me send me word things. One was a collection of insults from a time before English \u201cgot boiled down to 4-letter words.\u201d These days, most people would have to work hard to come up with some of these zingers. However, before swearing was as common as sand on the beach, good insults were works of word art.<\/p>\n<h2>Our Example<\/h2>\n<p>Back to \u201cyou\u2019re f-ing ugly.\u201d Let\u2019s face it, as far as insults go, it\u2019s boring and distasteful. Some well-known alternatives include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;He loves nature in spite of what it did to him.\u201d \u2013 Forest Tucker<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork.\u201d \u2013 Mae West<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;He is simply a shiver looking for a spine to run up.\u201d \u2013 Paul Keating, 24<sup>th<\/sup> Prime Minister of Australia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of these statements are appropriate in \u201cpolite society\u201d \u2013 people you do not swear around \u2013 and have a creative sting to them without being crass or overly rude.<\/p>\n<h2>Insults That Inspire<\/h2>\n<p>Obviously, those generally renowned for their words are often renowned for their insults specifically.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1108\" src=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/DrunkOnLamppost-sm-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/DrunkOnLamppost-sm-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/DrunkOnLamppost-sm-769x1024.jpeg 769w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/DrunkOnLamppost-sm-768x1023.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/DrunkOnLamppost-sm-1154x1536.jpeg 1154w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/DrunkOnLamppost-sm.jpeg 1454w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Enter \u201cMark Twain insults\u201d into your search engine and you will find gems such as, \u201cWhy do you sit there looking like an envelope without any address on it?\u201d or, &#8220;I didn&#8217;t attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Oscar Wilde knew how to throw a verbal punch. I think my favorite is &#8220;Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.\u201d &#8220;He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends,\u201d also has merit.<\/p>\n<p>Scottish poet Andrew Lang made an excellent comparison when he said, \u201cHe uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts&#8230; for support rather than illumination.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Overboard is Possible<\/h2>\n<p>As Abraham Lincoln said, &#8220;He can compress the most words into the smallest idea of any man I know.&#8221; And going out of your way to insult people is an extremely small idea. This is why I encourage spending time on your vocabulary. Learn new words and all of their meanings, you never know when they might come in handy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1106 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Tiger-Shovelnose-Catfish-sm-scaled-e1671139644184-300x146.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Tiger-Shovelnose-Catfish-sm-scaled-e1671139644184-300x146.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Tiger-Shovelnose-Catfish-sm-scaled-e1671139644184-1024x499.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Tiger-Shovelnose-Catfish-sm-scaled-e1671139644184-768x374.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Tiger-Shovelnose-Catfish-sm-scaled-e1671139644184-1536x749.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/torawriting.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Tiger-Shovelnose-Catfish-sm-scaled-e1671139644184-2048x998.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>For example, I am currently fond of tiger shovelnose catfish. To me, they look exactly like their name \u2013 so that may or may not be insulting. They are bottom feeders (not a compliment) as well as aggressive and do not always play well with others (also, not compliments). And I like how it feels when said out loud. \u201cDon\u2019t be such a tiger shovelnose catfish!\u201d just has a great ring to it! Even if I had never heard of one before, I would not be pleased by the comparison.<\/p>\n<h2>One More for the Road<\/h2>\n<p>With an expanded vocabulary, you can express your displeasure, make your point, and maybe even make people really think about the situation.
